The case for Miami. The Heat remade their roster around star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, with center Bam Adebayo still in the middle — a forward and a center who can handle most of the hard defensive work and still push the ball the other way after a stop. For James, that means he would not have to be the only star: Giannis and Bam can share the toughest defense and a large part of the playmaking — setting up shots for themselves and teammates — while he still plays a major role on a team with a real shot at a championship. NBA reporting has said James’s interest in playing with Giannis goes back to before Miami traded for him — so the draw is the pairing, not only a Heat reunion. James spent four seasons in Miami from 2010 to 2014 and won two titles under team president Pat Riley and coach Erik Spoelstra, so he already knows how that organization works — even though today’s Heat are built around Giannis rather than around him. The money will be modest by his recent standards wherever he lands. Miami can offer about $6 to $7 million — more than several rivals who can only offer about $3.9 million, the minimum salary for a player with his years in the NBA — and his camp has said pay will not drive the choice. On July 16, Miami formally introduced Giannis as a Heat player. That day, Giannis said he would love for James to join him in Miami, and Riley said the Heat have talked with James’s camp and are waiting on his decision. James himself has said he wants to compete at a high level and join a franchise that matches that. Over the days that followed, traders drove Miami’s chance from about 20% to 45%. That is the Miami case: a real shot at a title beside a star he has reportedly wanted to play with, now priced as the favorite.
The case for Cleveland. The Cavaliers already look built to win a title now — size with forward Evan Mobley and center Jarrett Allen, scoring with guard Donovan Mitchell, and more help running the offense if guard James Harden stays in the mix. For LeBron James, that is a roster with a real Finals path in the city where he has already won, without asking him to rebuild a franchise from scratch. A third Cavaliers stint is also the cleanest hometown pull: he has played 11 seasons and more than a thousand games in a Cleveland uniform, his Akron home is a short drive from the practice facility, and he has spent much of the past couple of weeks in Ohio with family. Recent reporting still puts Cleveland, Miami, and Philadelphia at the front of the field. That is the Cleveland case: a real shot at a title in his hometown, still a serious second place at 30% after leading near 51% seven days ago.
